Student FAQs:
Graduate Registration Requirements

What is considered full-time registration?

Univeristy of Florida students may be considered full-time with a registration of nine to 12 credits. However, most fellows and assistants on .01-.24 FTE (full-time equivalent) must be registered 12 credits in fall or spring and 8 credits in summer. (See the UF Graduate Catalog for details.) Students not on an appointment may want or be required to enroll full-time for at least nine credits.

What is "full-time equivalent" enrollment?

Full-time equivalent status refers to a required or prescribed registration requirement, which is less than full-time but considered appropriate in specific circumstances. This includes students on a .75-1.00 FTE assistantship, and also for circumstances outlined in the UF Graduate Policy Manual. Some departments or colleges may have certain registration requirements as well.

What is a "lockstep" program?

"Lockstep" programs are degree programs, such as the Master of Business Administration, where cohorts (students in the same year) move together in the same enrollment sequence with courses taught in a particular order on a particular schedule. Students have no flexibility in their program or sequence, and may not add or drop courses independently and individually. Upon department request, the UF Graduate School will certify specified students as full-time equivalent under the circumstances stated in the UF Graduate Policy Manual.

Can I be a part-time graduate student?

Unless you have a specific registration requirement by the government, an external agency, the university or your academic department, you may register as a part-time student as long as you maintain the minimum registration requirement of three credits in fall or spring and two credits in the summer.

What enrollment does the UF Graduate School monitor?

The UF Graduate School monitors registration requirements for students on appointment for a fellowship or assistantship and minimum registration for students. Any other registration requirements are monitored by the appropriate UF office.

Must I be continuously enrolled?

Unless you have a specific requirement to be continuously enrolled by the United States government, the University of Florida, or your academic department, you do not have to be continuously enrolled. However, if you do not have an approved leave of absence from your department for two or more consecutive terms, you are not guaranteed readmission. If you are readmitted, then a new catalog year will apply, with any policy changes.

Are there semesters during which I must be enrolled?

You must be enrolled during the semester that you take the qualifying examination for admission to candidacy for a doctoral degree, defend your master's thesis or doctoral dissertation, take a comprehensive final examination, and the final term, in which you graduate. Refer to the UF Graduate Catalog for details.

Do I need to be registered in the final semester, when I am due to graduate? What if I don't need the credits to fulfill my degree requirements?

Unless "cleared prior," students must meet minimum registration requirements (or be appropriately registered for the assistantship or fellowship) and be appropriately registered in courses that count toward the degree. Doctoral students not on appointment should be registered for 7980 (three credits in fall or spring, or two credits in summer); master's thesis students should be registered for 6971, or project hours if appropriate (three credits in fall or spring, or two credits in summer). Students on appointment should check the Graduate Catalog for specific requirements regarding their appointments.

What does "cleared prior" mean?

"Cleared prior" means a student is exempt from the usual final semester registration requirements because he or she has met all those requirements during the previous semester, but not by deadline. Students exempt from final semester registration and qualifying for "cleared prior" status must meet all of the following conditions before the start of the first day of classes for the semester following the one in which they met all graduation requirements:

(1) He or she must have been correctly registered in the preceding semester.

(2) He or she must have completed all degree requirements, including final submission of the dissertation, thesis or project and the final examination report.

(3) He or she must have submitted a final examination form, if receiving a nonthesis degrees.

(4) He or she must have cleared up all I (Incomplete) or other unresolved grades on his or her transcript.

(5) He or she must have filed a new degree application for the upcoming semester with the UF Office of the Registrar. (The previous degree application will not automatically "roll over" to the new semester.)

When can I adjust course registration without fee liability?

The deadline to adjust course registration without fee liability is called the drop/add period. It is several days during fall and spring, but fewer in the summer. Deadlines are published in the UF Graduate Catalog and UF Graduate Student Handbook, and available from the UF Office of the Registrar, both in printed form and online.

I tried to register or make adjustments, but I'm not sure it worked. How can I be sure?

ISIS (the UF Office of the Registrar's online Integrated Student Information System) will provide confirmation of your registration or drop/add transactions. If you don't get a confirmation, then the registration transaction has not been completed. You should contact your department for assistance if you are having a problem with ISIS. To access ISIS, click here: ISIS.

Why do I need to check my registration otherwise?

Please confirm your registration during the drop/add period so that errors may be easily corrected. You'd be surprised how many wrong section numbers go unchecked until grades are assigned at the end of the semester!

I missed the drop/add deadline. Can I still make changes to my registration?

Any drop/add processed after the deadline will result in registration fee liability, even for students with fee waivers.

Is there any student representation involved in making graduate policy about registration or other issues?

As stated in the UF Constitution, there is always a representative from the UF Graduate Student Council on the UF Graduate Council, the policy-making body for graduate education. The student representative and his or her alternate are listed on the UF Graduate Council webpage of this website here: UF Graduate Council.
